Strong smelling shrub/ plant?

I wonder if anyone can help please. We've recently moved to a new property with a number of shrubs in the front garden and surrounding gardens. One of the shrubs has an extremely strong, pungent, herbal type smell which I can only describe as smelling like a cannabis plant .. It's really unpleasant. It seems to be stronger on certain days. The smell seems to be particularly bad when the wind blows or when there has been rainfall. we have considered that it could be the soil too? We have tried and tried to identify which plant or shrub it could be coming from but to no avail... Has anyone got any ideas what this could be? A Many thanks in advance

  • Goodness, where did you find out what a cannabis plant smells like?   I don't think it would grow here.  Have you got a photo of the plant?   Someone on here will certainly be able to identify it for you.

A visual description would be helpful as well, smells are a rather subjective.

Visited a small quarry some years back.  A shallow hole in the middle of a Wiltshire field.  When I got to the middle, everybody was standing away from the rockface looking at a small 'garden' in the quarry floor. I made them leave it undisturbed as the gardener would have been well aware of our visit when he returned as we had to beat our way in through banks of nettles.  Several members of the group knew what it was and I confirmed their identification when I got back to my computer.

    viburnum even. Tsk @ self.

  • Ribes also have a pungent smell but I would suspect the soil. An old soil pipe,  soak away or septic tank are possibilities.

My septic pit is in a field on the other side of a fence and some distance from my garden but I get whiffs in excessive rain or hot weather when the wind is in the wrong direction.

Sorry may not have made myself clear. I cannot give a visual description but as we cannot identify where the smell is coming from at all.. All we have to go on is the scent.. it is stronger in certain areas and when the wind blows

Living near London you get to know what cannabis can smell like!

Thanks all for your suggestions, please keep them coming. I am taking note and will keep trying to locate offending plant
  • Hidden away in a grow tent in someones loft?  Lot of it about these days.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • smell is subjective. There are shrubs around here that smell to me of wee when it's been raining but other people don't get it

good luck in identifying it image
