Hi, When do you plant first early potatoes ? I live in the Bristol area of the UK. anyone got some in yet ?
Not until late March - traditionally the Easter weekend is the allotmenteers' potato planting time - although of course Easter moves around a bit it's the one weekend that working people can have a bit of extra time in the garden
Listen to aunty Dove.
Potatoes should be planted so that when they emerge from the soil, the danger of frost has passed. Many gardeners plant their potatoes far too early in the hope that they will raise an early crop but frost is a major enemy of emerging potato plants and will cause them significant damage.
Lesson according to uncle David.
My second earlies have been in the ground for a month now, and were growing well, but these last two nights of frost have caused the top growth, (about 10 cm) to be damaged. Will they continue to grow or is it necessary to start again?
