Talkback: Six of the best small trees

Golden Hornet starts off as fairly upright, but at least while it's young the thin branches get weighed down by the crabapples, so that it turns into a wide scraggly umbrella till the fruits fall off. You could tie up the tops of the branches, I suppose.

    I'm afraid that Acer palmatum dissectum wouldn't stand two minutes in this garden. One whiff of frost and the pretty little leaves look like scrunched up burned paper.

    Apophthegm -  a big word for a small thought.
  • I have bought a weeping crab apple that I hope will stay on the small side! Looking forward to planting it just as soon as it is warm enough to start reorganising a border!
