Golden Hornet starts off as fairly upright, but at least while it's young the thin branches get weighed down by the crabapples, so that it turns into a wide scraggly umbrella till the fruits fall off. You could tie up the tops of the branches, I suppose.

I'm afraid that Acer palmatum dissectum wouldn't stand two minutes in this garden. One whiff of frost and the pretty little leaves look like scrunched up burned paper.

I have bought a weeping crab apple that I hope will stay on the small side! Looking forward to planting it just as soon as it is warm enough to start reorganising a border!
