Repotting Lilly?
Hi everyone My husband has asked me to repot our Lilly today and I don't really know where to start. Normally I would just crack on and put it in another pot with some compost. I'm a bit hesitant on this as it was a Lilly which belonged to his grandad who is no longer with us, so I need to do it right, and cannot kill it. It currently has two long leaves which never die back, and has flowered every year for the last 8/9 years so it's very healthy. However it has grown so much that where the leaves from previous years have died back they have created a sort of pineapple looking 'skin' around the top of the bulb above the soil, does this need to be repotted to underneath the soil? Sorry, as you can tell I am absolutely clueless! Thanks!

Hi NIkB. What kind of lily is it? Is it one of the indoor 'Peace' lilies or something similar rather than the outdoor kind?
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Here it is, albeit on the side! It's not a peace lily, certain its meant for indoors. It's a gorgeous orange when it flowers, but was literally rescued from hubbys Grandads house so no labels or anything. Thanks for your reply, Fairygirl
Think that's an Amaryllis or a Hippeastrum, which is the same family. I have no knowledge of those I'm afraid but someone else here might know the best solution. You could also google the names and see if that helps. Many specialist sites will have info about plant care and cultivation

It certainly looks like amarylis foliage which would be right for this time of year.
I would leave it alone until it has finished flowering and all of the leaves have died off, around Sept. time. Then repot it into a slightly larger pot, measure across the top of the existing pot for size and go up by 1/2 ins to 1ins bigger, no more. Amarylis like to be pot bopund. Use fresh multi purpose potting compost.
I put my amarylis outside for a good hot baking during the summer but hesitate to suggest that to you because you do have to keep an eye out for slugs etc which enjoy eating the bulbs and I would hate to be responsible for the death of your precious plant. Just care for it as you have done since you acquired it, you are obviously doping something right!
