How to Cover Ground in the Shade
, a place of contemplation. The grass under the tree, with table and chairs, does not grow much. So what can we do about the bare ground?

My first thought is to put paving of some sort down ,leaving a clear circle of soil round the catalpa trunk. I see you already have a few containers in the area, you could then put some more on the hard standing (for example with mint, which would be happy in the shade and convenient to pick leaves for Pimm's). The bare soil round the catalpa trunk could be planted up with plants tolerant of dry shade ...cyclamen, snowdrops, epimediums, vinca...
