favorite clematis of the spring.

image

This is my favorite clematis (well one of many) it comes out the first in spring and lasts for so long. Its droopy petals fasinate me and just swoon over it till it fades. Its very easy to care for and in fact was a cutting given to me by a friend.I dont cut back very much  and in winter or when its finished flowering you get the "old mans beard" as seeds.image

That's very lovely, thankyou. It's a bit depressing out there today. Your pic reminded me that spring will come

It's an Alpina isnt it? I've seen them growing wild in the woods in Austria in the Spring. J.

It's lovely.  Unfortunately all my alpinas, montanas and macropetalas have been frozen to death over the last few winters so my first flowerer is a group 1 called Red Robin.   This pictures shows it just opening - http://s211.photobucket.com/albums/bb262/Obelixx_be/0905%20Garden/?action=view&current=0905golf258.jpg#!oZZ38QQcurrentZZhttp%3A%2F%2Fs211.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fbb262%2FObelixx_be%2F0905%2520Garden%2F%3Faction%3Dview%26current%3D0905golf259.jpg It starts of with rich burgundy buds then opens to flowers which are cream on the inside and it flowers for a good 2 or 3 months before making fabulous fluffy seed heads..  Luscious.

Is this a tough one? It's rather fine. When does it flower?

I had a beautiful blue macropetala but it's disappeared. Could this be because it's not as hardy as the others? I have 4 montanas that survived last winter's -17° and Nelly Moser that's in a pot with a Falstaff rose. The Nelly Moser had got rather big and tatty and had been pruned hard the year before, but she still had lots of flowers.Talk of spring clematis made me look through my spring photos. Isn't spring lovely?

This was to follow after the clematis photo when I said "isn't spring lovely", but it didn't want to download.

Nut Cutlet - My Red Robin starts flowering in May and has has its main flush in May and June but carries on flowering sporadically until August.  Ther's some info here - http://www.clematis.hull.ac.uk/new-clemdetail.cfm?dbkey=3222 but their colour photo is paler than mine.
