Canna: Over-wintering.

This is my first time growing a Canna and I'm delighted with it.  It is in a pot on the south Dorset coast against a south facing wall.  I cannot move it so I have enveloped it in horticultural fleece.  Should I have cut it down and if so where to?

Thank you in anticipation.

Make sure it's off the ground as well to help the drainage. I'm about to move mine round into a sheltered corner and will use two windows I got from a friend as a temporary shelter for it as we'll get a lot of winter rain. Like yours -  it's too big to bring indoors. image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Well spotted Verdunimage!  I'm getting carried away trying to grow plants that I couldn't when I lived in the Peak District.

      What does cutting back achieve?

I can't protect it with anything other than the fleece however thanks to Fairygirl I shall put pot feet under it and try to keep it dry.

  • Thanks folks.  My first time asking a question on the forum...LOVE IT!image

  • Thought I'd update you kind gardeners on my Canna.  I protected it with fleece and raised it up on pot feet last Winter.  After the un-veiling it produced  more stems and flower heads.

I was so proud that I posted it on Facebook for my friends... how sad am I?image
