Hanging baskets in the winter

been given some hanging baskets that i know flower or flowered in the summer and they also have ivy in them to,we would like to know what to do with them over the winter months, they used to be hung on a 6 foot fence, we can not be sure if they was left there all winter but we think they was because of the ivy, thanks for any advice
