alterrnative to fruit tree banding

Hello everyone

I have a very big, old apple tree which I have pruned into shape so that the fruit is more easier to reach.  However, I think it also needs some sort of coverage round the base trunk to stop insects climbing up during the winter.  Banding doesn't get into the recesses of the bark.  Is there a cheap alternative of a wash of some sort I can buy or make to do the trick?  Ideas much appreciated

Many thanks

Hi nikki - Yes, you can buy fruit tree grease.

It's like thick black vaseline. You paint it round the trunk, and get into all those nooks and crannies.
