Forum home Wildlife gardening

Hello, I'm new to this, I'm a keen gardener and when planting consider the wildlife the plants will attract. We have introduced many boxes to encourage the birds and wildlife one of which is a bat box and although I try and watch for activity I have never seen any bats emerging from this box although we do see them flying around the garden. It has been in place now for a couple of years and I wondered how would I know if this box is occupied without disturbing?

Listen for them scratching as they move around in the box.  Watch for them emerging at the appropriate time in the evening. Make sure the box faces the correct way, on the house.

In our house they prefer to roost under the fascia boards and they also go through a small hole in the apex of the gable-end.

  • You could always ask the bat conservation trust for advice, there will probably be a loca contact.
