traffic noise

what trees/shrubs would you recommend to help block traffic noise?  there are a number of conifers but quite a few have died and need to be replaced but I'm not sure what would be best.

Bamboo is often recommended for combatting traffic noise.

How noisy is it? If it's just distance noise you might get away with masking it by installing a water feature and the sound of trickling/tumbling water might be enough to 'mask' the traffic noise? If it's close and loud then planting might be better but you could still add the water feature to work with the hedging?

  • Thank you for your suggestions, I hadn't thought of bamboo but had wondered about rhodedendron (dont know if soil is ok for them)  there are a couple of water features but not yet heard them running although all the neigbours seem to have them also.  the noise is from a major trunk road about an acre away so is very loud. It look like a good mixture of all might need to be incorporated.
