Red Onion Sets
in Fruit & veg
We have just lifted our red onions, some of which had bolted, and cut off the leaves about 2" from the onion. Can we just cut the onions up now for the freezer or do we have to dry them out first? This is the first time we have grown this vegetable.
Thanks.

Great, Thanks for your reply. Will have them washed and in the freezer shortly. x
Why are you putting them in the freezer? Onions are usually dried off and stored in a shed or garage, or somewhere cool.

But use the bolted ones first, they keep less well than the others. IME red onions are ready bolters.
I thought that if they were to be dried, the leaves should have been left on. Therefore the fact that we cut the leaves off meant that they had to be used or frozen. This is why I asked originally if they now had to be frozen or could they still be dried.
Why not try out both ways? Use the ones that have bolted for freezing as they won't keep so well and dry the others off.
That's sensible. To be honest I just wondered if they would be edible whether they had been dried out or frozen or eaten now.
