How tall, long and strong is your fence?
In the sticks near Peterborough
I've grown Mme Alfred Carriere against a south-facing fence - it was fine - in fact absolutely gorgeous (although plagued by black spot in some years, but then so are many others).
Paul's Himalayan Musk is a glorious rose and will grow 12 feet wide and 30 feet high, and when I say will, I mean it - it will do it - so look at your fence - unless you live in a tennis court it's not the rose for your fence. It would be glorious growing up through a tall and venerable old apple or pear tree, past it's best fruiting years.
If you're looking for a pale pink scented rambler 'Narrow Water' might fit the bill - it has a similar flower shape to PHM, but it shouldn't swamp your garden http://www.classicroses.co.uk/products/roses/narrow-water/
Just ordered Narrow Water. Never heard of it before. Hoope your decription fits. Mme Alfred Carriere grows well on N facing fence. Is that why you have one?
My Mme AC grew on a south facing fence in an east facing garden surrounded by tall buildings, so even tho' it was south facing the number of hours of strong sunlight it received were limited, so the petals didn't bleach out.
Narrow Water is gorgeous - it grows beautifully in a friend's garden - I'm trying to find room for it in my new garden.
Hi.
My fence is fairly new, and about 6 and half feet tall. My garden is south facing.
will definately look out for Narrow Water, it sounds lovely.
one other question... will my PHM be ok growing up a north east facing wall at the front of my house, because i dont have any old trees, and I definately dont live on a tennis court
Thank you guys
I really wouldn't grow it up a wall or a fence - http://www.google.com/imgres?q=pauls+himalayan+musk&hl=en&sa=X&tbo=d&rlz=1C1SVEE_enGB425GB425&biw=1241&bih=584&tbm=isch&tbnid=rZ3E-dQp_z9DcM:&imgrefurl=http://foto.mein-schoener-garten.de/Pauls-Himalayan-Musk-neu-foto-1184974-20.html&docid=R3V4zO-r2bgIqM&imgurl=http://foto.mein-schoener-garten.de/userimages/8050/nm/1184974&w=400&h=300&ei=adCkUInCH9GT0QW294CAAw&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=612&vpy=281&dur=1555&hovh=194&hovw=260&tx=118&ty=94&sig=101027862799127917371&page=2&tbnh=139&tbnw=176&start=20&ndsp=25&ved=1t:429,r:36,s:0,i:185 this is how big it gets!
I suggest you have a look on the Peter Beales Classic Roses website I linked to in my earlier post above - it has a brilliant search facility down the left hand side where you can put in the features you're looking for and it will come up with loads of suggestions. Good luck
Thank you D
This link was really helpful, wow this rose is a monster, but a very beautiful one.

I've grown both of these, and whilst lovely, they want to be huge!!! Much better grown up into a tall tree....
Thank you Daytona675. As beautiful as it is I think PHM is far too ambitious for my fence even though its new and sturdy
I went out today, and bought narrow water. A much better choice Dove thank you, also Zephrine Drouhin. Should be in by the weekend.
Both lovely roses
