I wonder if anyone knows what these plants are. The stems are about 12 inches long with the flowers hanging down in clusters from the top of the stem. The flowers are starred and lilac.
I'd love to know too, saw this plant today in a wildlife garden at an RSPB reserve it's a beautiful thing I also took a photo to load up here, thanks for saving me with all that kerfuffle!
It also comes with white flowers. Self seeds and much loved by bees. Seedlings are easy to weed out if you don't want them where they appear. The flowers look good in salads and the flowers can be eaten. If you think ahead you can freeze the individual flowers in ice cubes - look lovely in drinks ..........
Thank you all. Will now also look for the white flowered version. It seems to be an ideal plant as it is growing in my garden in both shade and sun. Also my garden is poor sandy soil - not much more I could ask of a garden plant
Just an addition to my previous post is that in the early days before I had any real idea of what I was doing gardening wise I brought these as seeds because the picture looked nice. I just threw the seeds in the area I thought I would like them to grow and hey presto! here they are!
It will grown in any soil in any aspect and once you have it you will never get rid of it. Second only to foxgloves in my garden for seeding in unwanted places.
Oh, that's what I like about foxgloves, the amount of self seeding they do - I just take out seedlings if they are not where I want them. So guess I will do the same with the borage

Yes, I did that once. Then the next year, in an area I thought I would NOT like them to grow, there they were... and so on.
