Why do they look like this?

Hi, for the past 2 years i have been trying to grow Nasturtiums.  However both years they have looked like the above photo.  Any idea, what i could be doing wrong.   The current bed they are in was only created this year would that have anything to do with it?

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Many thanks

I'm by no means an expert but it's possible you've been much too nice to them! They generally grown best in soil that is not enriched. In your lovely raised bed you maybe have lovely new compost. Mine seem to like being chucked in a sunny spot and ignored!

Flo-is spot on-they need rubbish soil-anything decent and it will too many leaves and not enough flowers

Hi guys, thanks for that.  They are planted in new compost as the bedding was only created this year.  I was wondering if it was that. But!  then all the hanging baskets i have seen with nasturtiums will have fresh compost and they are not like my display.

Don't get me wrong, it may not be what i hoped for - its still on the dramatic side and the leaves are beautifulimage

The ones in hanging baskets rely on you feeding them as the food in the compost quickly runs out-in a bed they are not so confined and the roots search out food and water

There are also  named varieties that hold the flowers above the foliage, they're called Whirlybird http://www.thompson-morgan.com/flowers/flower-seeds/nasturtium-seeds/nasturtium-whirlybird-mixed/1760TM.  They don't trail like the traditional ones, so if you want that you could grow some of each.

No-one knows if you've done your housework, but everyone knows if you've done your gardening !
