I think you may have answered your own question-watered well could be translated as over-watered-is there sufficient drainage?-if the leaves showed signs of wilting but the compost is damp adding more water compounds the problem
I would carefully extract it from the container and inspect the roots-it may be saturated or it could be the dreaded vine weevil attack.
