Hi Jennifer, do you have bird feeders with niger seed in them? I think you will find that your yellow flowers are self sown niger plants. I often have them in my garden, and must admit it took a while to find out what they were. They make quite big plants and the flowers are very pretty.
Oh thanks Norfolk dumpling, it's very likely from bird seed. It's very attractive now it's grown. The colours are lovely. And thanks to nutcutlet as well.
Hi nutcutlet, nice to talk to you. I've never had any of the plants over-winter. If we get a really windy day some of the niger seeds get thrown out of the feeders and they come up like cress. Very small seeds but they make big plants! They are like annuals as they only seem to be about in the warmer weather.
Yes, Jo47, but they will soon disappear when the lawnmower goes over them.
They won't make much in the grass, but make quite large plants in soil if left. I've already pulled up loads this year as they are coming up all over the place.
