I cover my allotment beds for winter, should I apply manure before I sheet them over or in Spring when I uncover them?

  • I wouldn't cover the beds - how is the wind, rain and frost going to do it's work?  But that's just me. image

As for the manure - I'd clamp it over the winter so that it is well-rotted and then spread it in late winter/early spring - the worms will then start to work on it and you can fork it into the surface as soon as the land is fit to walk on.

  • thanks, I cover the beds to stop the weeds growing

  • What is soil solarization?
