What is wrong with my apple tree

My husband as chopped our apple tree back a little, and it's got brown marks (not small ) running through it. I'v looked in all my book's and cant find anything like it.Could anyone help.....please. thank you.

The only thing I know of which causes brown streaks in branches of Apple trees is Silver leaf disease. The leaves should have had a silvery sheedn on them before they fell. There is no treatment if it is this. The tree will die. Hope I am very wrong.
