Bloodgood acer problems

I had a beautiful 15ft Bloodgood Acer in my garden for over 15 years then last year it just collapsed and I thought it had died, but this year about 6" from ground level it has sprouted about 12 leaves and is growing well, albeit small growth....why did it all of a sudden 'die' ???and now has revived it's self ......puzzling is there a chance it might recover?

Are the leaves identical in colour to the old leaves?
yes they are blood red
