Aralia spinosa - devil's walking stick

Hello,

My husband planted an Aralia Spinosa in our garden about 20 years ago.  We have only just found out what it is to be honest as it was a very small cutting when he was given it.  Its now about 25 foot tall and needs pruning.  Can anyone tell me when the best time to do this is?

Thank you

Hi Wendy, is this a multi-stemmed tree and you want to remove some or do you want to reduce the height?

I should think the dormant season would be best but I've never pruned one. I left one behind in my last garden so someone has probably pruned it by now

  • Hello nutcutlet, I just wanted to remove some of the branches that are over hanging my neighbours garden. But I can't find out when the best time is...

Most deciduous plants are best pruned when dormant. I think I'd go for late winter with this one. They're not that common and it's always difficult to get info for the less common..

RHS advice is to prune in early spring before they start to grow again.
