Unknown plant or weed?

Don't know what either are but these seem to grow prolifically - are they weeds? Help to identify would be great!

Thank you

  • I'm not sure about he first one but the second one looks like houttuynia chameleon. I saw it mentioned on the 'Beautiful Thugs' thread and it looks just like the one I looked up.

The top one is an oxalis. Probably a cultivar of Oxalis tetraphylla

    and houttuynia cordata 'Chameleon'

    In the sticks near Peterborough

I'm grateful for the photos Mud Patch as last week I was offered a cutting of the second one by someone who has a large garden of over 3 acres and didn't know what that plant was. Apparently this plant is a thug so I'm glad I have been pre-warned so now I think I will politely decline the offer.

I had that second one in a raised bed in my old house. Luckily it didn't spread to other parts of the garden, just the whole raised bed. Whenever I pulled it out I got a lovely whiff of oranges.

  • I have the second one growing as a shallow marginal plant in my pond. The multi coloured foliage looks wonderful in a large clump although the small white flowers are a bit insignificant. It's foliage, when laying on the surface, gives great shade and cover for the fish. Not noticed any scent, unpleasant or otherwise.
