Dragonflies eat insects Bizzie, they don't have nectar sucking euipment.

They catch hundreds of small flying things.

I like it when they sit chewing and spit out the legsimage

If I sit still they'll sit on me to do that

Well I never!  thanks nutcutlet. image

Now would that explain why the emerald green was zooming around the garden? Catching flying insects.

    Wasps! Goodness me.

Thank you both, good to learn something new image

Its amazing isn't it BizzieB. They are the flying insect equivalent to the Great White shark, the apex predator.

However, they can in turn fall prey to the Hobby, one of the few birds of prey agile enough to catch them image

Just been reading up on the dragonfly. Absolutely fascinating!

That would have been my next question Fishy65, thanks. Natures law. Are Hobbys still an endangered species?

Thanks snowathlete, I'm looking for more plants to bring the bees into the garden. Not heard of deutzia.

This may be of interest, visiting a garden today and was delighted to see bees and butterflies on a border of Origanum laevigatum (not the culinary oregano). Walking past them was like a scene from Disney! image  Really must get that plant.

Not endangered BizzieB. They are summer visitors to the UK...look out for a Kestrel sized falcon but with shorter tail and longer wings. Black head markings similar to Peregrine but they have reddish feathers around the legs. They are very fast flyers and take small birds as well as insects image
