Stunning Poppy.

image

Dear Forum Members,

Does anyone have any in-depth knowledge of poppies and can tell me what one this is? It grows to quite a height (1 metre ish) with two tone petals of red and purple.

It's a stunner. Shame the petals are so fragile and short-lived!

Many thanks

Papaver somniferum aka the opium poppy.  There are many double ones such as pink chiffon but you'd have to search for this variety. It looks like it is reverting to the single species type, although in Turkey that would be more white/purple.

No. We dont get long enough hours of sunshine for the alkaloids to develop properly here. It needs long hot days , like Turkey or Afghanistan summer. They will be growing types selected for alkaloid production. We grow for pretty flower production.image

Not particularly. Pharmacognosy was once upon a time. Its fascinating how plants produce chemicals , particularly alkaloids and glycosides, that then have an effect on mechanisms in the human body. Most old drugs were plant derived. Digitalis for the heart and opium as a precurser to  opioid analgesics particularly popular. Senna pods  and Rhubarb root extract as laxatives being another. THC being extracted from Cannabis and used as a pure extract for Multiple Sclerosis treatment shows that research is still ongoing.
