HOYA - WAX FLOWER
I have a new pergola and one of the climbers I would like is a hoya to provide both scent and year round foliage - in view of severity of the last couple of winters, is this a good idea?
Your suggestions for alternative evergreen climbers would be appreciated.
Many thanks.

I've had one for years but only as an indoor plant. Mine came from an Aunt who had the original in a sunny conservatory, but not sure how they would do outside.
Have you considered the evergreen winter flowering clematis 'Freckles' ?
Thank you digging doris and kate 1123 for your replies. Hoya is off! I shall take a look at 'Freckles and also trachelospermum jasminoides as suggested by a neighbour; maybe also one or possibly two climbing roses?? I'm hoping to plant herbs and lavender around the base of the pergola which has a seating area - so visions of warm evenings surrounded by wonderful scents! Nice to dream......
Thank you once again.
Trachelospermum jasminoides is a lovely plant - mine is flowering
at the moment and scenting the garden

Pam - your plant is really splendid, I'm definitely getting one! How long will I have to wait to see the same result??
Thank you!
Our plant is a few years old but garden centres usually sell them when they are about 5' tall

Hoya is definitely a houseplant.
Though Hoya is a lovely plant, it is a houseplant in this country. Both Clematis Freckles and Trachelospermum are lovely choices. Why not grow both intertwined
I'm assuming it's a sunny spot? Also Clematis armandii is evergreen, very pretty, early flowering and fragrant
Thanks everyone for your advice/suggestions - Trachelospermum and 'Freckles' have been ordered from a local nursery together with a climbing rose 'Schoolgirl' that took my fancy! The pergola gets plenty of sun (when it's available??) - so here's hoping! I'm told that 'Freckles' has its origins in Sardinia and the Balearics, both places that hold good memories, so the planting will have even more significance!
THANK YOU.
