Identification of climber
Hello. Could anyone help with identifying the climbing plant in the attached photos, please. It has appeared climbing in competition with our Boston Ivy, and we're not sure whether it's an 'imposter' or something that the previous owner of our house might have planted that is only just getting into its stride. It is about to come into flower and has lots of tiny green/cream-coloured buds. Many thanks in advance.

Hi there - can't be certain but looks like Virginia Creeper to me. We have one growing against a wall. Very vigorous, deciduous and red leaves in winter before they fall.
Not sure which would win in the battle for supremacy - the Boston Ivy or a Virginia Creeper !!

Hi Greyfleur, if you do a search on google for virginia creeper it comes up with pictures of leaves just like yours. If you want to cover something fast these two plants will do a serious job for you!

i would say this is a virginia creeper just by looking at it leaves and as ppl have said it is a great climber and fast to...also the leave go a brilliant red in autum which whould be a great contrast to your boston ivy... lucky you ...
I am a nidiot! Yes, it's Parthenocissus quinquefolia (virginia creeper). I was thinking of Parthenocissus tricuspidata which I've always called virginia creeper.

same foliage and both go red.. ?
Yes, I think they are, but is was the five-lobed leaf that confused me, the one I know has three and looks less robust.
