moving oriental poppies

I need to split my oriental poppies because they keep falling over with the sheer weight, when is the best time to do this, I have cut back all of the leaves so there is only some stubby looking plants left. Many thanks for any advice offered.

Autumn is the best time to do this as the soil is still warmish and it is damper. You could do it now but it is chancy. If you did, you would need to water thoroughly and often until the autumn rains come.

I moved some of mine today funnily enough. They don't look amazingly happy, might have to chop some leaves off. I'll water them again tomorrow; I'm sure they'll pick upimage

  • Bad news is that you will shift them and then spend years trying to eradicate them from their moving spot as they will grow back from root fragments!
