himalayan poppy

I recently bought 2 blue himalayan poppies and 1 white one. After planting them 3 wks ago and are doing well, some of the leaves have gone black and died. They are in dappled shade and have kept them watered in this hot weather. Can anyone tell me why. Thankyou.

    Mine did the same, then died and disappeared, I believe its because they prefer an acid rather than alkaline soil.  However I am sure I added some ericaeous compost....and peat. Maybe it has been too hot over the last few weeks and it has killed them off....

    They were growing well in the remarkable gardens at Skipton, North Yorkshire- they must have been 5 foot high.  Parcevall Hall Gardens are a renowned historic plantsmans garden located at the heart of Wharfedale in the Yorkshire Dales National Park- well worth a visit- the best garden I have been to.

    They are an absolute swine to grow, dont be disheartened! I watched an episode of GW where even Monty confessed that he struggled with them. I think its a case of if you have the right everything for them, then great, but otherwise forget it! image

    I have two. Bought this last spring from a specialist at a plant fayre, they have grown okay but no flowers, and they were 2nd year plants. image This is the one plant I would love to be able to grow but can't.  This is my last attempt.

    They are in a bed with dappled shade in moist slightly ericaceous compost, planted with well rotted farm yard manure, watered with rain water if needed, and misted with seq" iron as per growers instructions. I've spoken to them nicely, sworn at them and to no avail.

    I haven't actually seen one in flower image     I know Punkdoc on the forum can grow them. Fidgetbones has some but I think her blue ones turned a different colour this year  image   

    I know they grow well in Scotland and the Lake District but they don't like me or my garden image

    They do grow in the Botanical Gardens in Sheffield but weren't in flower when I went. Good job or I'd have been in trouble for picking one image

    The leaves often seem to look scabby and unhealthy especially when young but it doesn't seem to effect them. We grow them in ericacous soil in a netted covered building. They do seem to dry out quite easily. If you didn't know they had such a beautiful flower you wouldn't bother. Been advise to nip out flowers in first year. Am in the north so seem to like it!

    Thanks everyone for replying. Seem to be doing all the right things. Fingers crossed they'll survive.
