in Fruit & veg
I know it is very late in the season, but could you tell me whether it is still possible to grow tomatoes from seed?

Not really-you will be so better of buying in plants-but you have little to lose by trying
I'm trying to freecycle a dozen surplus plants but can't get any takers! I'm near Southampton Chris if by some miracle you are too!!!
No, I am afraid I am miles away in Norfolk! Which is a shame, but thanks for the offer.
Any village fetes on in your neck of the woods, artychris? Often a good source of home grown surplus plants. I'm after cucumbers myself.
Isnt that annoying Ive 4 cucumber plants needing a home pity we live so far apart
If you know someone with tomato plants, you could pot up some off shoots. They root very easily.
Put it this way, *it takes six weeks to grow tomatoes from seed to the planting-out stage (so that takes us to the end of July) it takes another eight weeks to bearing fruit (that takes us to the end of September) then ripening takes (depending on the weather) another 4 weeks say.
So I would reckon you wouldn't be picking until about November, by which time the daylight would have gone.
*All these times are approximate, but I reckon they are about average.
