Will this keep the carrot root fly out?

This is made from two wire racks I had, joined together then with six stiff wire legs and cheap fleece on top. I made it this high because I plan to use the same but with debris netting later in the year for PSB. My main concern is whether the stones and bits of wood to hold the fleece on the ground will be sufficient?

This made me chuckle as what a lot of work has gone into keeping a tiny insect out.  It looks like it will hold OK as it seems to be tucked into a corner as well.  Just keep a close eye on it, keep watering them and I hope you get some good carrots.

    Looks good to me image
  • That looks fine as it is a fine mesh fleece so should hold them back. I would just advise to check regularly to see if any stones have moved and there are gaps.

Monty says they can only fly about 2 feet off the ground so as long as you can get the sides up that high you won't need to put a top on, which will make it easier to water. I have used the same kind of fleece to make vertical barriers around my carrots, the tips are now poking out the top. So far no problems with carrot fly.

Well before too long I'll be testing that theory I think as I'll want to use this frame with netting over the PSB. At which point I think I'll just create two vertical fleece barriers to tie up with the fences and hopefully that'll still keep the blighters out.
