What is eating my plants ?

I planted a border of french marigolds, two hydrangers and some young hollyhocks plus new shrubs, within a week all my marigolds and one of my hydrangers have been completely eaten flowers and all the stems, l cannot see any slime to indicate slugs or snails, as my garden is quite full of assorted trees and bushes l have quite a collection of different insects, l have nightly visits from a family of badgers and maybe a hedgehog and l also feed the birds, does anyone have any ideas,

Hello celia. The number one suspect when it comes to marigolds is Mr Slug. Even though you can't see any slime trail, it will be slugs. Marigolds are to slugs what chocolates are to a chocoholic.

Apophthegm -  a big word for a small thought.
If you live in Derbyshire, as I do.
  • Thank you for explaining pansyface, looks like l need to put some pellets down, l have been reluctant until l was sure it could be them because of the birds, thanks again, x

  • Thank you Verdun and Mike l really appreciate your help, l will try the salt solution and send my hubby out tonight to  check for them, l planted a row of marigolds in front of my runner beans they havent found them yet but it seems lm waving a flag at them saying` oh look nice green beans come and get me `` x
