Hi, Remind me what a North facing fence means, I get sun from dawn till dusk, a fence on the right of my garden provides some afternoon shade, where I'm trying to grow hosta's and have planted shade loving shrubs, an 8ft high fence to the left provides no shade after lunch and plants get full sun till dusk.
When do you get the sun or is the area always in shade?
I'd go for clematis - early flowered blue Lasurstern or mauve Nelly Moser, or the later flowered pink Hagley Hybrid and mauve Victoria are just a few of the clematis that will be happy in containers on a north facing aspect - but you will have to take care of them.

Hi Zoomer44 the plants would catch a tiny bit of sun very early morning, but then be in the shade all day. If tey reach the top of thefence they wll see the sun again. I'm wondering if anyone knows of a suitable evergreen?
Another climber suitable for north facing walls is Hydrangea Petioralis - it's not evergreen but the red stems look fantastic in the winter. It climbs without the need for support, has beautiful creamy white flowers and provides a nesting site for blackbirds and robins. http://www.findmeplants.co.uk/plant-hydrangea-petiolaris-0107.aspx

On my north facing fence I have clematis montana, I did have a Nelly Moser which was fine there, until the slugs got it! Hydrangea Petioralis as already mentioned too.
Also a couple of pyracanthas & honeysuckle seems fine there too, I can't remember what variety they are.
The other climbers there are roses Danse de Feu & Madame Alfred Carriere. I also had Madame Gregoire Staechelin until it died for no reason!
So I guess it depends on how large the pots can be.

Sorry I can't help but I'm sure others will. Happy gardening.

Sounds great. Going to nursery this pm. Will see what I can find.
