Pruning a grape vine
in Fruit & veg
I have been away for six weeks and have come back to my grape vine on the pergola in a rampant state...obviously! Can I trim it back and tie it in now or will that damage it? I am not fussed about fruit this year as the purpose is to create a Mediterranean feel over the pergola.

If it is a new vine, you need a framework before you prune for fruit. Tie in new shoots to give a good framework, remove all others. Next year you prune new shoots back to two buds from the main framework to give fruit shoots the following year.
I use the rod and spur system for a black hamburgh in my greenhouse.
