Put "growing potatoes in sand" in Google you'll get a lot of answers.
I haven't tried a google search, but I do know that Egypt exports a huge amount of spuds and these are largely grown in desert areas.

Seed potatoes for "Jersey Royals" can be bought as "International Kidney" - same thing. In Jersey, they grow the earlies on sandy slopes to make picking easier and used to feed them by digging-in seaweed before planting, but only a few of the farms still do that.
thanks Bob I watched a very interesting video on the net about growing spuds in sand they dig a 100mtr deep well in the desert watered the area every 18 hours with sprinklers used Scottish spuds to grow and Irish peat to save them in and then send them back to old blighty and still made good money ,cant knock can u
