Laying turf on gravel

Hi Guys I have a large area outside my new home that is gravelled and I'm planning on removing the large stones and membrane to then re-distribute it and mix with topsoil before laying turf. Does this sound as though it will take okay?

  • Stuart - you need more soil than gravel. In fact I would recommend you use the gravel elsewhere, also remove the membrane. The prep you put in now will be reflected in the quality of lawn you end up with and how much maintenance it requires. But a good 6 to 12 inches of topsoil will give you a good chance. Before spreading topsoil try to ensure any compacted subsoil is broken up. Use a pre-turfing fertiliser to help aggressive root development of new turf.
