I remember seeing orange slugs in Eastern France about 35/40 years ago; they had a frill around their middles, a bit like a ballet tutu. So far have not seen any here in the Fens, but the slugs this a.m. were 4 to 6" long Why were they all in the road? I was very puzzled by that.
A long time ago, when I kept cattle, some of them got out and wandered into the village to graze the churchyard (embarrassed smiley) . The children of the village all turned out to help us herd them back up the hill and we gave some of the older ones bowls of cattle food to tempt them with - a couple of bowls got spilt on the lane and when I walked my daughter to school the next morning there were two patches of road absolutely covered with slugs of all shapes and sizes, feasting on the molasses-soaked grain. They have a sweet tooth!

I often wonder why slugs, with all the hiding places in my garden, choose the concrete floors in the summerhouse and carport to shrivel up and die
