Gherkins

Hello,

It's my first year growing Gherkins so I am a bit new to them! I was wondering when everyone picks them?
I have one or two that look ready but would just like to know at what size everyone else picks them. Also when it comes to pickling can you keep adding to the jar? As I only have 2 that seem ready to pickle at the moment but more within a week or so.

Yeah, it's tricky unless you grow quite a few gherkin plants so that you have lots of fruit all coming ready at the same time.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Oh dear maybe the one in the picture is a bit big then lol oh well you never know unless you try image
  • I've got a few that are 2inches and just under so all is not lost lol

Can I use the larger ones or are they best off in the bin?
  • Thanks Philippa Il give the those large ones a try like that.

Tut, tut, please do not suggest putting good food in the bin.  Peel and eat!

  • Lol I didn't know if it would have a funny taste due to the size it is.
  • I did of course mean the compost bin image

I was just unsure whether they would taste okay / be edible due to their size, however judging from the responses I gather that they are image

Phillippa my comment was not addressed to you.

I accept that you, NGCARDS and everybody else on this board never waste food, but someone must do as thousands of tons of it are thrown away every day.  At least my council makes compost from the contents of our waste food bins.  None of it goes to landfill.
