What are the benefits of spreading compost before laying new turf?

Hello, am new to this website, and kinda gardening in general. Can anyone tell me what the benefits are of spreading compost before laying new lawn turf? It was one of 'Adam's Tips', so I'm wondering is it essential, and what are the plus points?

To give grass roots something to root into and to level the ground for the turf. Horticultural sand is the more commonly used material for laying turf onto. As it is easier to level and is less messy.
