This is an inherited clematis in my garden, any help with which it is would be great, thanks. It's growing up the 'totem pole' (conifer trunk), needs to be tied in (no self clinging) and each petal is approx. 2" long.
Thanks Edd, it's very much like black prince but the colour in the photo is quite true. The colours of black prince seem to be more dark purple / deep red, is that true of yours?

Thanks everyone, sprawling up a totem pole may not be ideal for it! I'll keep an eye on it overnight to make sure its not pole dancing!
Thanks panda, pots not too pretty, I always intended wrapping some Hessian around them. I grow alpines and sempervivums in them, tilted so the water doesn't log in them, unfortunately too tilted and they were getting no water at all, hopefully rectified that today.
Had to look this old thread up to remember name .Must post a picture of it again tomorrow , it's doing better than ever this year ( with zero attention other than tying in)! Plants in pots relocated btw.

I'm with Edd. Clematis Durandii. Mainly because I bought one last year and planted into a bigger pot and still haven't found a proper home for it yet.
it's a sprawler rather than a climber, which is why I'm struggling to find it a home.
