Pruning a large established camillia

Hi, first post here from somebody with a new found interest in gardening - so here is the first in what will probably be a string of dumb questions.

We have a quite large Camellia, no idea of age but 10ft plus tall and probably 7ft across, it's a magnificent plant that is smothered in gorgeous red flowers when it blooms but it now needs to be reduced a little.

Is it ok to just take some shears to it or should I just cut it a but more carefully with secateurs, I did it once before a few years ago but can't remember how I did it but it certainly did it no harmimage

It is, the camera phone picture really doesn't do it justice.

Thanks verdun, another job that needs doing sooner rather than later then.
