Bamboo garden underplanting

I have an area with several types of bamboo, youngish plants, 3-5ft.  Its a dry and windy area with poor stony soil. And by windy i do mean WINDY!

was advised on purchase to underplant with hostas, and they have done brilliantly and  do look good, but its early days and LOTS of bare soil.  

What would you suggest to fill it up a bit until the bamboo establishes itself a bit more?

    my sister has a garden full of bamboo and all she has underneath are hostas, but im afraid theres not much else she can grow, it does tend to take over and not leave room for much else, shes taken it all out on the front garden and it needed a huge digger! good luck they do make a lovely sound!

    What about ferns? There are so many, there must be one that would like it. I wonder if a low growing rose would work, i remember seeing them in sand dunes at woolacoombe bay image

    Ferns definitely worth look, but not sure they would like the position.
