A couple of rose questions

Orchid LadyOrchid Lady Posts: 5,800

I have two rose questions, the first one is about my Many Happy Returns rose, there is a stem growing in the middle (see pic below), is this ok or should I cut it off, I'm not sure what a 'sucker' is and wondered if this was one or is it just normal growth.....it looks different to other growth though?

The second is a cheap rose from Aldi and seems to be growing very tall.  I can't remember the variety until it flowers as I got the 4 labels muddled up (I'm good at that image).  There is a bud right at the top of the stem....should I cut it back or is it ok?

They both look fine - no need to worry.

On the Happy Returns rose - that's just new growth.  Modern shrub roses are unlikely to sucker, and that's not sucker growth anyway.

On the Aldi Special image  That's just growing too -  it's happy and is going to flower soon - enjoy.  When the flower is over you can deadhead it by cutting that stem back by about one third.

You might need to move that sedum image

Hello OL, I have Many Happy Returns and it's a lovely little rose. Mine opened for the first time yesterday. If the shoot is coming from a point above the graft (that knobbly bit near the soil) then it is part of Many Happy Returns and you are looking forward to some nice flowers. If it comes from below the graft then there is a fair chance that it is not.

The other rose looks very healthy. Leave it to flower.

Apophthegm -  a big word for a small thought.
If you live in Derbyshire, as I do.

Thank you both. Dove, that Sedum I only planted there a couple of months ago, it was a tiny baby that was near my main one so I moved it.....I only realised when I looked at the photo how big it's actually grown, strange isn't it how I didn't notice....oops! It must like BFB image

I will just sit back and wait for lovely flowers.  I'm hoping the tall Aldi one is my yellow one as the other 3 have no buds yet.

OL., is it possible that the second rose is a climber. If it is then the branches need to be trained, or you will only get flowers at the stem tip.

That's a good point Punk, not that I know of but I suppose with Aldi bargains you never can be sure image There is only one bud at the tip, how do I know if it's a climber? They were all meant to be bush roses (if that's the right word?).

If it's a climber it will keep growing up and up, and it will throw out some more long canes from the base that continue to grow up and up - if it has a flower bud on it at that height my guess is that it's an HT bush type, but stranger things have happened.  We can only wait and see image

What's HT Dove (Hybrid Tea?) if so, then I think it is.  I need to see what colour it is when the flower opens and I'll know what it's called.
