What is this weed?

My parents live in Lincolnshire and have just shown me this weed for me to ID.

Really struggling with this one.  Any help?  It spreads by rhizome (picture below) and is a good inch think with shoots coming up off this.

The stems are hairless with waxy leaves.  It is starting to be quite invasive and it is getting the round up treatment where ever it pops up which is getting to be quite a lot of places.  I don't know how large the plant grows as it is killed off at the first sign of growth.

Any help would be fantastic..

It looks like a tree root suckering.

Cherry sucker? I've got lots, I just keep cutting, pulling or mowing. I can't use weedkiller as I don't want to damage the original trees.

Didn't even think about suckers but think you are right.  There is a cherry tree fairly close to some of the suckers so thanks for that.  Cheers
