Portuguese Laurel

LindaB 2LindaB 2 Posts: 3

We have recently planted a mature hedge of Portuguese Laurel about 6ft high. The plants appeared to be fine at first but now the are becoming thin. Some leaves did yellow and we took those off. Could anyone advise if we need to prune. I am concerned as it has been so wet.

They are tough old beasts, so you need to expect a little yellowing after planting. I'd let it establish a little before you prune. They like moist, but relatively well drained soil, so unless your'e waterlogged I wouldn't worry. You can prune in midsummer so give it till July before doing so. They can take a hard prune, so if you get some shoots dying off take those out first, then you can turn your attention to shaping if need be.

Were the laurels container grown or bare root?
