Please forgive me if any of you are offended by what you think is an inappropriate use of this forum.

If you love trees, you may have seen on the news about the proposed destruction of a piece of Ancient Woodland in order to permit the construction of a motorway service station on the M1 outside Sheffield.

Sheffield planning department are currently taking written objections to this via their website. The woodland is called Smithy Wood. It is over 850 years old and part of Sheffield's greenbelt.

If you would care to add your objections to its utter destruction, please visit Sheffield's planning department website and express your concerns before, I think, 16 May.

Thanks. And apologies if this is an inappropriate use of the forum. I just can't sit back and do nothing.

Pansyface, I'm surprised to hear about that...aren't there already several services along that stretch? Woodall, Tibshelf & Trowell? Maybe they're a bit south of Sheffield...

There are plenty of service stations in the area. There is also a brown field site designated as development land not half a mile away.

If this goes ahead, no Ancient Woodland in the country will be safe from development as it will set a precedent.

The proposal is to plant saplings in another area to compensate for the loss of these venerable trees. As someone has commented on the planning site, it's like pulling down Westminster Abbey and saying that a modern building is suitable compensation.

Again, sorry for the rant. I just can't believe that this is even being considered.

pansy, don't apologise; how about starting a separate thread then you will be able to mobilise/access far more forum members to complain. Suggest you give us the email address of that dratted planning dept tooimage Go for it!

Thanks Artjack. I'll do that. And leave you to enjoy AWB's thread in peace. Sorry, AWB.image

No problems, I am not a fan of the planners.

Pohutukawa, that's a new one, if I couldn't live in England New Zealand would be my next choice.

Not a great fan of the foliage, but it does make a sharp contrast. Acer brilliantism ?
