Ear fungus

I discovered this growing on a large hebe bush where I'd cut off a branch last year. I've found out what it's called but wondered if it is likely to spread to other plants. I'm assuming it only grows on rotting wood but want to be on the safe side. Amazingly like an ear!

I'm fairly certain it only grows on dead wood, and this link seems to bear that out

There's another thread running about this one. It must be having a good year. All that rain we've had.

Did anyone watch Young Musician of the Year last night? One of the contestants was giving a little extra info about himself and said that he likes to go foraging for food. One of the things he collected was this, called a Jew's Ear fungus. Apparently used by the Chinese in stir fries.

Not to be confused with a Jew's harp....
