Advice with a clear exterior wood varnish to protect cut logs please??

Hi All

We are doing up our front garden and instead of paving it we have got hold of a whole tree trunk which we have had cut into log discs, dried out and we are going to use these as circle patterns instead of paving stones.

To ensure these logs last a good while I want to protect them using a varnish or treatment of somekind, can anyone recommend some clear wood varnish that would do a good job of this please?   I am not working so cannot afford mega expensive stuff, maybe £30 max if poss.

Many Thanks in advance for any help! Hope you have all had a lovely bank holiday weekend.

I'd try an oil based sealant, they'll stay about longer, any good exterior stain will do, and you can choose the colour as well.

Varnish will make them slippery when wet - I agree with Dave - go for a good exterior wood stain - the sort you use on fences.

  • Hi there, thanks a lot for taking the time to reply.  We were hoping to keep the logs just as their natural colour so wanted to use a clear sealant, is there such a thing as exterior clear stain/sealant please?

I think preservative is the word you should be looking for. Not sealant

Sorry but I know it should have been "preservative" but I was using the terminology the poster used to avoid mix ups. If I wanted timber to be protected for many years I would have it pressure treated with clear Tanalith-e  which does not contain cyanide that many pressure treatments do.

  • Thanks for the replies folks, I was kicking myself when I read the word preservative as I just couldn't think of the word when I wrote last reply.

I shall look for some of the ronseal clear as I find their products fairly reliable.

    Cheers Again!
