What size container is best?

I find it hard to decide what size container to use: so often, the instructions just say something like "large". I read somewhere that you should aim to place plants in to a container twice the size of the rootball. I have just purchased nine hardy fuchsias from T & M and want to put them in individual terracotta pots. They will apparently grow to about 30cm x 30 cm. What size pots should I use?

The larger the better, large pots are slower to dry out, less likely to blow over etc. I tried to grow a hardy fuchsia in a pot and have given up and put it in the border.
