Last years potatoes in May

J82J82 Posts: 2

I've just been at my allotment and dug up a row of potatoes I'd left in from last year. They had sprouted but when I dug them up and broke the sprouts off, to my surprise (especially since we're in May!) they look great. They've been under black plastic that I'd left to keep weeds down so I guess it's acted like a clamp? Can anyone advise if the'd still be ok to eat?

If they're not black or mouldy or green or full of holes, I don't see why not. They've basically just been in storage.

I've got a different take on this as several of mine from last year are now growing strongly up through my parsnips and beetroot. A real pain.

Hope one can eat them as we are still eating our way through the last sack of Second earlies from last year.

I'd eat them if they look ok. The black plastic probably helped keep them warm and produce new tubers. As for volunteers, I've just relocated quite a few and made up a whole new row! May not get much from them but I thought it was worth a try.

I'd never heard that expression 'volunteers' before. Thanks both.

Thank you all for your comments and feedback. They look absolutely fine so I'll be trying some tonight for tea I think. If Berghill is still muching through them, I'll try it.

Happy growing all. Best Regards. J
