Murky water in Pond

  • help the tadpoles grow into frogs. I can tell you what I did and it was successful. Float a piece of white sliced bread on the surface of the pond. They will find it and start sucking the edges. When they are growing their legs I put a piece of raw liver on a piece of cotton ( this is so you can get it out ) and replace it every few days. They seem to need protein to grow well. My tadpoles were whoppers
  • So will my tadpoles be ok in there planter pond then for winter? read that they are good at surviving low temperatures. These are my first taddies, also noticed keep finding dead slugs in my pond, yuk disgusting

I have never heard of white bread being a food for tadpoles, I thought they were meat eaters, I am not convinced these tadpoles will survive in a pot or bucket, they should be well grown and gone by now.

  • They are late Tads, don't know why they haven't grown and gone yet,my sister have got some the same, some are frogs and some from the same eggs are still taddies, odd!

I read that if conditions aren't right, they will stay as tads until conditions are right, I have never actually seen it in real life, but obviously it's true, I hope these over winter and grow on next year.

They can survive low temperatures, but not being frozen - they also need plenty of oxygen in the water otherwise they'll suffocate - oxygen cannot get into the water if it's covered with ice.  The sludge in the bottom of the pond is where pond creatures spend the winter.

  • Put some daphnia in pond,I've also bought a little plastic green house type thing to cover over my pond, it is 58cm x 58 x 58 tall hopefully will keep off the snow, maybe help it to not freeze, will see, keeping close eye on it!
